A diary of the renovation work that took place in Mumbles Methodist Church.
Welcome to our virtual tour around Mumbles Methodist Church. Join us and enjoy, as we travel through the weeks of work, sweat and dirt and follow the alterations as they happen. We can guarantee that you won't get as dusty as we did either!!!

On Friday 28th January at the Marriot Hotel, Swansea, Mumbles Methodist Church won another award. This time it was the City and County of Swansea ‘Built in Quality Awards’. We now go through to the national finals in Cardiff. Watch this space!!!!

December 2004
Great news! We have received a "commended" Architectural Enhancement Award and a "commended" Category 11 Award from "The Lord Mayor's Design Awards 2004". Click to see the photos, (photo 1, photo2)

2nd October 2004
... and so the long journey of the transformation of our Church building was over. It now stands out, clean, fresh and inviting, as a beacon, with a door that is always open to the community of Mumbles.

26th September 2004 - Opening Day

The main doors were fitted, just in time, as the long awaited official opening day arrived. The first service was conducted by the Rev. Will Morrey (photo2). He also unveiled a commemorative plaque.
At 6pm a Circuit service was held and as night fell, the church was floodlit.

For more details on the opening service, click here.

2nd - mid September 2004

Cleaning has finished. The church is gleaming. Look at the Worship Area, what a lovely surprise, with the reflections of the cross on the back wall, reminiscent of Calvary.
The Upper Foyer is sparkling and new. Notice the original doors hung on the wall. Looking up from downstairs.
The non-alcoholic bar is ready for action.
Theo's was opened after the first service on 5th September, for coffee and then later in the month it started trading.
The newly relocated Mumbles Tourist Information Centre also opened, (photo2).

12th - late August 2004
"Spring Cleaning", albeit late Summer has now begun with fervour, in the Church. Look at the Foyer. The upstairs meeting room has been carpeted, including the stairs to the second floor and the rooms there. (photo1, photo2, photo3, photo4, photo5)

11th August 2004
The chairs arrived today and a work party unloaded them, got them upstairs via the lift, unboxed them and placed them within a couple of hours. We even had a Bermudan Reserve Policewoman heping us. A good job done well! One is of the new Youth Area on the ground floor at the rear of the church. The other is of the Worship Area when we were placing the new chairs in position.

6th August 2004

The keys of the church have now been handed back as the contract is vitually complete (Note: there are still some jobs to finish, including fitting the front doors!) but the contractors have left site for now.

Look at the photos of Theos, now that it has been cleaned up (photo1, photo2).

See the handing over of the keys. Mr. A. J. Evans, Construction Manager of R. & M. Williams Ltd is handing the keys to Howard on the 6th August 2004 in the presence of Mr. R. Liddell, Architect, other contractors personnel & Church Members.

4th August 2004
The building is now being cleaned up. These photographs are of the Worship Area, as panoramic shots. (photo1, photo2)

22nd July 2004
Quite significant progress has been made in the foyer. A lovely door mat has been inset into the floor with the words "Welcome to Mumbles Methodist Church" inscribed around the edge.

In the upper foyer, the glass surround has been erected, that overlooks the downstairs foyer and the floor has been laid. It's really coming together now.

14th July 2004
A new floor and a vibrant colour for the youth of today, in the non-alcoholic bar.

9th July 2004
The serving counter arrives in Theo's, so does the second coat of paint!

Prepare for the 'Wow' as you take a peak at the near-complete Worship Area. Painted, glassed and floored. God is certainly there. All we need is some chairs, a minister and erm, maybe the congregation? (photo1, photo2)

25th June 2004
At the back of the church, the non-alcoholic bar is now fully in situ and looks much cleaner and brighter after a lick of paint.

Upstairs, the first floor storage and meeting rooms now have doors, radiators and is that flooring I see in the photo?

7th June 2004
Work has been underway outside this week, on the ramp leading into the front of the church.

Glass has been secured in the wooden frame in the entrance to Theo's and the partition between Theo's and the TIC has also appeared.

The new youth area / alcohol free bar (still awaiting a name, if anyone feels inspired!) has progressed with the installation of the bar and ceiling lights. Very pleasant it looks too.

28th May 2004
What a difference eleven days make! Let's start downstairs. The doorway leading from the foyer into Theo's/TIC is in place. The entire area has been painted and ceiling lights fitted. A wooden surround beyond which settees will be placed in the corner of "Theo's" has been erected. The cooker, fridge, sink and some other bits of Theo's kitchen equipment has arrived and been installed.

On the first floor, work has begun on the wood and glass entrance leading into the new worship area. More patch plastering has been taking place and the new corridor leading to the first floor meeting room has evolved. The first floor meeting room has been painted. (Bye bye globe).

On the second floor, the heating system has arrived. (It's not really the controls for a space ship!) and the rooms have been painted (photo1, photo2). (Who said this top floor was going to be a self-contained flat?)

17th May 2004
If you have blinked, since the earlier photos of the new worship area, you may have noticed that the doorway at the front of the worship area has moved from the right to the left! Also a hole has appeared above the new doorway to house some part of the organ.

The new first floor meeting rooms have been plastered throughout and are getting ready to be painted. The globe has half disappeared and lovely new ceiling lights have been fitted.

21st April 2004

The original worship area, on the ground floor, that is becoming the cafe and the Tourist Information Centre (TIC) is really taking shape now. This photo shows the view from the main entrance. The TIC will be located to the left of the entrance and the new Theo’s café to the right. The man in the distance, is stood within the new café.

This photo shows the same area, looking outwards towards the main front doors. Here you can see the TIC area on the right, the cafe area on the left and the room that has been constructed to house the kitchen. The ceilings have been newly plastered and temporary electric lights have been installed.

Work is continuing on one of the original staircases at the front of the church that is being retained as part of our heritage.

4th April 2004
Things are really beginning to look like the plans now. Look at the new worship area. The photo is taken looking towards the congregation. The passageway between the old 'Top Spot' and the new worship area has been boarded out and the new staircase to the new 2nd floor at rear of church has been added. The photo also shows the entrance to new 1st floor meeting room.

1st March 2004

The staircase that leads to the new Worship Area has been built at the front of the church.

At the rear of the church the old choir vestry on the ground floor has been enlarged to create a Youth Centre with a non-alcoholic bar.

The old worship area has been split and a new kitchen area constructed on the left hand side.

Work has started partitioning off what was the old Top Spot into the first floor meeting room, storage rooms, offices and toilets and yet more partitioning has been taking place in the new 2nd floor meeting rooms. Let's hear it for the plasterboard!

21st February 2004
The unveiling of the front of the Church.

13th February 2004
The under floor heating pipes have been covered in the new Worship Area.

29th January 2004
The first floor is in and the under floor heating pipes have been laid in the new Worship Area.

December 2003
Work has continued on the supports for the first floor, the ground floor having been laid last month. The lift shaft has also been started. The kitchen walls are also in place.

November 2003
The church becomes the most noticeable building in Mumbles and catches everyone's attention because of its shroud.

Inside, the foundations and supports have been laid for the new floors.

22nd October 2003
The ground floor has been taken up and the diggers arrived.

9th October 2003
The balcony has been taken down and the pulpit removed. Meanwhile, a wall has been dropped in the old choir vestry.

Dunns Lane was closed this week as work commenced on the roof.
