The youngest touring choir in Wales performed in over
185 concerts in the USA. The Black Mountain Choir comes to Mumbles
The Black Mountain is the youngest Male Choir in Wales with an average age of 25. They were formed in 1996 by Mike Evans, whose company, Black Mountain Records specialises in Welsh choral recordings. He received a request from the USA for a touring party and set about creating a choir which would attract a younger generation to one of Wales’ oldest and greatest traditions. In January 1997, the 36 strong group left for a three month tour. 20,000 miles and 65 performances later the four corners of the US had been covered. They had just completed the largest tour by a Welsh Choir since 1893. This achievement was recognised by the Wales Tourist Board winning it’s prestigious award for the marketing of Wales. Other tours of the US followed in 1998 and 2000, a massing a grand total of 155 US concerts. The choir has performed in numerous British TV productions including a documentary on the music of Karl ‘Adiemus’ Jenkins. A tour of Hong Kong was also included. The choir featured in the performance of the Rugby World Cup theme with Shirley Bassey and Bryn Terfel (patron of the choir) which received worldwide coverage. Prior to them leaving for their 4th tour of the USA in February 2005 the Black Mountain Male Chorus will perform at the new Mumbles Methodist Church on Thursday evening January 20th. Time TBC. It is planned that further concerts take place during the summer months. The Choir is now recruiting for their US tour of 2005.
