Bible Study Wednesday 10.00-11.15am
O.K. so what happens at this meeting? It must be a question asked by many
especially by those who have never been! Maybe there is a need to explain.
That is in essence what the meeting is about, seeking to understand more
of God's word. Each week about a dozen of us meet to study a book from
the bible and currently we are considering what Paul had to say to the
infant church in Colosse. But that is not where we start. Firstly we bring
before God in a time of prayer, various matters that maybe worry us or
perplex us as well as giving Him the praise for all that He has undertaken
for us.
So prayer time comes to an end and we start to delve into the riches of
the book of Colossians. Paul wrote to support, encourage and to teach
a predominantly Gentile that is no Jewish church the truths of the gospel.
His task was the same then as ours today, to see the church of Christ
grow both spiritually and numerically. He confronted issues head on in
a way that left no room for misunderstanding.
To those that claimed there were different paths
to God, or special knowledge only given to a select few was required Paul
said nonsense. There is, Paul teaches, one way to God that is through
Jesus Christ, who died on a cross, was buried and rose again having conquered
the power of the devil and He alone as the power to confess our sin before
the Father when before Him we have been brought to repentence.
Paul stresses the need to grow spiritually so that we can be used for
the work God has set for us all to do. By prayer and studying the word
of God we all have the opportunity to do just that. We are not a select
dozen, but we are, as all Christians, privileged and called to follow
Him.
Maybe you have never thought of attending, perhaps
you are nervous of what you don't know. Paul never went to the church
at Colosse because he was in prison in Rome but he certainly wanted to.
Maybe God is challenging you to join the group. Whatever we see as a reason
for not seeking more spiritual food, and let's face it none of us live
on one meal a week we are not in prison. So think and prayer as those
in the group will and we look forward to seeing numbers swell in the coming
months.
